Dua After Adhan: The Secret to Instant Rewards

What is the Adhan?

The Adhan is a powerful reminder that calls Muslims five times a day to pause their worldly tasks and turn to Allah SWT. I remember hearing the azan as a child, feeling a deep sense of peace and spirituality. It’s not just a call to prayer; it’s an invitation to reconnect with our purpose and prepare for worship.

Making dua after the Adhan has always felt like a natural extension of that connection. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH highlighted its virtues, and I’ve personally felt its profound impact. Whether reciting suggested supplications or speaking from the heart, this moment feels sacred and blessed, bringing me closer to Allah SWT.

What is the Adhan?

The Adhan is a beautiful Islamic call chanted by the muezzin from the mosque tower, indicating the times for the five required daily prayers. It’s a powerful appeal made with certain Arabic words that praise Allah SWT and declare the Islamic faith, encouraging the faithful to prepare for salah. Hearing it always fills me with a sense of peace and readiness to connect with Allah.

Hadith in Bukhari 578 narrates:

“When Muslims arrived in Medina, they needed a way to assemble for prayer without guessing the time. After days of discussion, Umarfirstsuggested a man to prayer, and Allah’sApostleorderedBilal to pronounce the azan, a practice introduced to replace bells (used by Christians) and trumpet horns (used by Jews)

The sound of the adhan fosters solidarity among Muslims, serving as a regular reminder to put their relationship with Allah SWT first. Despite life’s distractions, this call to prayer holds deep spiritual significance, reverberating through villages and cities. It sets believers apart, creating a sense of unity and devotion every time they listen to the azan.

The Spiritual Significance of the Adhan

The adhan holds significant importance in Islam, highlighting the virtues of connecting with Allah SWT through prayer. It’s a representation of the call to mandatory prayers, with its hours indicated by the azaan.

The Prophet Muhammad PBUH emphasized its value in numerous hadiths, and its accounts and sayings are preserved in collections, reflecting its deep spiritual and practical role in a Muslim’s life..

One Hadith states,

“Whoever hears the adhan and does not respond, there is no prayer for him except with an excuse.”  Sunan Ibn Majah 793″

The adhan’s functions go beyond being a beautiful recital; it’s a creed of Islamic faith, emphasizing the proclamation of Allah SWT’s greatness.

It serves as a potent reminder for Muslims to offer the required salah, fortifying their resolve to perform daily prayers. Its calling function also acts as a public reminder, possibly easing resistance among non-believers through its words rooted in the Quran

The Most Powerful Moments for Accepted Duas

In Islam, specific times are believed to hold special significance for supplications to be accepted, especially when seeking guidance, blessings, or protection.

These moments include the last third of the night, during rainfall, while prostrating in prayer (sujood), and on Fridays. Such opportunities deepen our divine connection with Allah SWT, as emphasized in Islamic teachings, making dua a powerful act of worship

Is dua accepted between Adhan and iqamah?

One of the special times when the dua is more likely to be accepted is following the adhan.

The time between the azan and iqamah is a window of acceptance for supplications, as highlighted in hadiths narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger (peace and blessings upon him) said, “Supplication is not rejected between the adhan and iqamah” (Narrated by Ahmad, 12174, and classed as sahih by al-Albani). This period is encouraged (mustahabb) for making sincere dua, as it holds exceptional potential for being heard by Allah SWT.

Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever says: ‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi’l-da’wat il-tammah, wa’l-salat il-qaimah, ati Muhammadan il-wasilata wa’l-fadilah, wab’athhu maqaman mahmudan illadhi wa’adtah’ (O Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the privilege and intercession, and raise him to the praised position You have promised), will be permitted my intercession on the Day of Resurrection” (al-Bukhari, 589). This specific dua is preferred to be recited immediately after the adhan, as it signifies the start of prayer and deepens one’s connection with Allah.

Regardless of the place or time, supplications made with proper tajweed and sincerity are always heard by Allah SWT. The adhan serves as a constant reminder to engage in dua, especially during this exceptional period.

As a companion in our lives, the adhan not only calls us to prayer but also encourages us to strive for a deeper divine connection through supplication.

Proper Etiquette for Listening to the Adhan

  • Observing proper etiquette while listening to the adhan demonstrates respect and maximizes its spiritual virtues, making it a significant element of faith.
  • Stop whatever you are doing, listen attentively to the words of the muezzin, and avoid distractions like pausing conversations or turning off devices.
  • Fully immerse yourself in this sacred moment, allowing its profound message to penetrate your heart and strengthen your bond with Allah SWT.
  • It is recommended to recite along quietly with the muezzin, repeating the words and phrases of the azan to deepen your connection to the call to prayer.
  • The adhan serves as a beautiful recurring reminder to turn towards Allah SWT, even amidst busy days, so remain mindful and consciously choose to pause.
  • Understanding the translation of the adhan transforms it into an act of spiritual experience, embracing its acts of reverence and supplication.
  • By giving full attention to the adhan, you reinforce its significance in your life, strengthen your commitment to faith, and reap countless blessings.

Etiquette based on Hadiths

The hadiths in Sahih Bukhari and other collections provide specific guidance on the etiquette of listening to the adhan, emphasizing its sacred honor.

Several hadiths highlight the importance of listening attentively, pausing all activities, and offering prayers as a response to this call. This best practice not only respects the adhan but also deepens one’s spiritual connection during this dedicated moment.

A hadith in Bukhari 584 states: “Anas bin Malik said,

This is box title
“Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) went out to fight in Allah’s cause against a nation, he would wait until morning to see if they heard the Adhan. If they did not hear the Adhan, he would attack; otherwise, he would postpone the attack. This practice reflected his respect for those who upheld the call to prayer”

In Bukhari 587, it is stated:

“When the Mu’adhdhin said, “Haiya alas-salah” (come to prayer), Muawiya responded, “La hawla wala quwata illa billah” (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah). He added that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying the same words in response to the call.”

Responding to the Adhan: Repeating After the Muezzin

It is recommended to recite along quietly with the muezzin, repeating the words and phrases of the adhan as a Sunnah practice.

This act of regard for the du’a during the time of the adhan strengthens one’s connection to the call to prayer. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) taught this practice.

When the muadhdhin says, “Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar”, you should respond, “Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar”. Similarly, when he says, “Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah”, you reply, “Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah”. This repetition is a form of active participation in the adhan, affirming your faith and devotion.

However, when the muadhdhin says, “Hayya ‘ala’l-salah” (come to prayer) or “Hayya ‘ala’l-falah” (come to success), you should respond, “La hawla wa la quwwata illa Billah” (There is no power nor strength except with Allah). This unique response highlights the reliance on Allah alone for guidance and success.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized that whoever repeats the adhan with sincerity and heart will enter Paradise (Narrated by Muslim, 385). This practice not only deepens your spiritual connection but also serves as a beautiful reminder of the adhan’s profound significance in a Muslim’s life.

One hadith states

This is box title
“When you hear the adhan, say what the muezzin says, as mentioned in Bukhari, 585. The above hadiths encourage believers to quietly repeat the words of the adhan along with the muezzin.”

Considerations for Listening to the Adhan

Beyond the fundamental etiquette mentioned earlier, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provided additional guidance to maximize the spiritual benefits of the adhan.

He emphasized the importance of responding to the call to namaz with attentiveness and sincerity, urging believers to pause all activities.

The Salafis were particularly mindful to focus solely on the adhan when it was heard, ensuring their hearts were fully present. This practice not only honors the adhan but also prepares one for reciting dua after it, deepening their connection to Allah SWT.

How to recite the Adhan

The adhan is a beautiful, evocative call that serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prepare for namaz. To learn and practice, follow its specific structure, which includes phrases like Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, and Ashadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah, each recited with repetition.

The muezzin says Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah and Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah, repeated two times, before ending with Allahu Akbar and La ilaha illa Allah. This outline ensures the adhan is recited correctly. For deeper exploration, many resources are available to help you practice.

From my experience, the adhan is more than a call; it’s a spiritual connection. Its evocative phrases and specific structure bring peace and purpose, making it a profound act of worship.

Du’a before Adhan

As far as I know, no specific du’a is recited before the adhan, as this time is not singled out for any type of supplication. Doing so would be considered a reprehensible innovation (bid’ah), as it is not part of the authentic practice. However, if someone accidentally says a du’a before the adhan out of coincidence, there is nothing wrong with it, as long as it is not done intentionally.
